    • Quote: “As a generation that has the sacred charge to prepare the rising generation for its prophesied role in the latter days, which role must be fulfilled in a time when the adversary’s influence is at its peak, we cannot be a source of confusion about the importance of following prophetic counsel. It is that very counsel that will allow the rising generation to see ‘the enemy while he [is] yet afar off; and then [they can make] ready’ to withstand the enemy’s attack. Our seemingly small deviations, quiet neglect, or whispered criticisms in response to prophetic counsel may result in our only walking dangerously near the edge of the covenant path; but when magnified by the adversary in the lives of the rising generation, such actions may influence them to leave that path altogether. Such a result is a generational price that is too high. Some of you may feel you have fallen short in your efforts to follow the counsel of President Russell M. Nelson. If that is the case, then repent; begin again to follow the counsel of God’s chosen prophet. Set aside the distraction of childish cartoons and trust the Lord’s anointed. Rejoice because once again ‘there is a prophet in Israel.’”

  • Commentary: Commentary on D&C 52:22–44
  • Quote: “As Saints of the Most High God, we are to ‘remember in all things the poor and the needy, the sick and the afflicted, for he that doeth not these things, the same is not my disciple.’ Opportunities to go about doing good and to serve others are limitless. We can find them in our communities, in our wards and branches, and certainly in our homes. In addition, every member of the Church is given specific formal opportunities to serve. We refer to these opportunities as ‘callings’—a term that should remind us of who it is that calls us to serve. If we approach our callings as opportunities to serve God and minister to others with faith and humility, every act of service will be a step on the path of discipleship. In this way, God not only builds up His Church but also builds up His servants. The Church is designed to help us become true and faithful disciples of Christ, good and noble sons and daughters of God. This happens not just when we go to meetings and listen to talks but also when we get outside ourselves and serve. This is how we become ‘great’ in the kingdom of God.”
    - Dieter F. Uchtdorf, "The Greatest Among You," April 2017 General Conference.

  • Commentary: Section 56: Context
  • Commentary: Commentary on D&C 56:1–4
  • Commentary: Commentary on D&C 56:14–20
  • Quote: “Ours is not to judge; ours is a covenantal obligation to care for the poor and the needy, to prepare for their rejoicing when the Messiah shall come again. The Lord’s ‘own way’ includes, first, reliance on self, then on the family ... If one’s family can’t help, the Lord’s ‘own way’ includes the Church organization. The bishop is assisted by priesthood quorums and good sisters of the Relief Society, organized to look ‘to the wants of the poor, searching after objects of charity and … administering to their wants.’ Members of priesthood quorums and groups have a duty to rehabilitate, spiritually and temporally, their erring or unfortunate brethren. While a bishop extends aid to one temporarily out of work, the quorum arranges for his employment until fully self-supporting again. As individual members of the Church, you and I participate in the Lord’s ‘own way’. At least once a month, we fast and pray and contribute generous offerings to funds that enable bishops to disperse aid. This is part of the law of the gospel. Each of us truly can help the poor and the needy, now, and wherever they are. And we, too, will be blessed and protected from apostasy by so doing.”
    - Russell M. Nelson, "In the Lord’s Own Way," April 1986 General Conference

    • Commentary: Agency
    • Quote: “The Lord’s way is designed to help each of us prepare for our own needs and also to care for those in need in such a way as to preserve or restore their independence, industry, and self-respect. It decries those who are wantonly idle, ‘whose hearts are not broken, whose spirits are not contrite, and whose bellies are not satisfied, and whose hands are not stayed from laying hold upon other men’s goods, whose eyes are full of greediness, and who will not labor with [their] own hands!’ It rejoices, however, in seeking out and ministering to the blessed poor, ‘who are pure in heart, whose hearts are broken, and whose spirits are contrite.’”
      - Victor L. Brown, "The Church and the Family in Welfare Services," April 1976 General Conference
    • Quote: “Taking up one’s cross and following the Savior means overcoming selfishness; it is a commitment to serve others. Selfishness is one of the baser human traits, which must be subdued and overcome. We torture our souls when we focus on getting rather than giving. Often the first word that many little children learn to say is mine. They have to be taught the joy of sharing. Surely, one of the great schoolmasters for overcoming selfishness is parenthood. Mothers go into the valley of the shadow of death to bring forth children. Parents work hard and give up so much to shelter, feed, clothe, protect, and educate their children. I have learned that selfishness has more to do with how we feel about our possessions than how much we have. The poet Wordsworth said, ‘The world is too much with us; late and soon, / Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers.’ A poor man can be selfish and a rich man generous, but a person obsessed only with getting will have a hard time finding peace in this life.”
      - James E. Faust, "What's in It for Me?," October 2002 General Conference
    • Quote: “In 1831, the Lord said: ‘Remember the poor. … Inasmuch as ye impart of your substance unto the poor, ye will do it unto me’. A little later, he again declared, ‘Visit the poor and the needy and administer to their relief’.. Later the same year, he warned: ‘Wo unto you rich men, that will not give your substance to the poor, for your riches will canker your souls’. With these teachings throbbing in our ears, stated and restated in accounts to all people in all days of recorded scripture, let our thoughts return to the homeless, beggars in boats, human beasts of burden, and to multitudes stricken with poverty.”
      - Russell M. Nelson, "In the Lord's Own Way," April 1986 General Conference
