Monday

  • Commentary: Section 49: Context
  • Scripture: Doctrine and Covenants 49:1-10
  • Quote: "We do not know the precise time of the Second Coming of the Savior, but we do know that we are living in the latter days and are closer to the Second Coming than when the Savior lived his mortal life in the meridian of time. We should resolve to begin a new era of personal obedience to prepare for His return. Mortality is fleeting. We all have much to accomplish in preparation to meet Him. As Latter-day Saints, 'we believe all things, we hope all things. … If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things.' What do we believe that will motivate us to move forward? What do we hope for? What are the virtuous, lovely, or praiseworthy things we should seek after? I believe we should strive to develop within ourselves the traits of the character of the Savior."

    • Quote: “Questions, conjectures, and speculations are rife among the people. Some ask, ‘Is this Armageddon?’ Others, ‘Will the Savior come when, this war is over?’ Yet others are busily engaged in proving that present events, countries, men, and even dates, may be read into the prophecies of thousands of years ago. To all such questions there is but one answer: We only know that this is the dispensation of the fulness of times, the Saturday evening of the earth’s temporal existence. These are the ‘last days,’ days of much commotion, to be followed by the millennium and the presence on earth of the Lord Jesus Christ who will ‘put all enemies under his feet.’ We know that the coming of the Lord is nigh, but He has warned us that ‘the hour and the day no man knoweth, neither the angels in heaven, nor shall they know until he comes.’ All that has been set forth in great clearness in the revelations to the Prophet Joseph Smith and his successors. There is no benefit in prying beyond the revealed word of the Lord.”
      - John A. Widtsoe, "If Ye Are Prepared Ye Shall Not Fear," April 1942 General Conference
    • Quote: “There are some of our members who practice selective obedience. A prophet is not one who displays a smorgasbord of truth from which we are free to pick and choose. However, some members become critical and suggest the prophet should change the menu. A prophet doesn’t take a poll to see which way the wind of public opinion is blowing. He reveals the will of the Lord to us. The world is full of deteriorating churches who have succumbed to public opinion and have become more dedicated to tickling the ears of their members than obeying the laws of God. In 1831, some converts wanted to bring a few of their previous beliefs into the Church with them. Our problem today is with members who seem very vulnerable to the trends in society (and the pointing fingers which attend them) and want the Church to change its position to accommodate them. The doctrinal grass on the other side of the fence looks very green to them. The Lord’s counsel in 1831 is relevant today: ‘Behold, I say unto you, that they desire to know the truth in part, but not all, for they are not right before me and must needs repent.’”

  • Scripture: Doctrine and Covenants 49:11-22
  • Commentary: Commentary on D&C 49:8–14
  • Commentary: Commentary on D&C 49:15–17
  • Commentary: Marriage Is Ordained of God
  • Commentary: Commentary on D&C 49:18–21
  • Quote: “Following our baptism, each of us had hands placed upon our head by those with priesthood authority and was confirmed a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and the Holy Ghost was conferred upon us. The statement ‘receive the Holy Ghost’ in our confirmation was a directive to strive for the baptism of the Spirit. The Prophet Joseph Smith taught: ‘You might as well baptize a bag of sand as a man, if not done in view of the remission of sins and getting of the Holy Ghost. Baptism by water is but half a baptism, and is good for nothing without the other half—that is, the baptism of the Holy Ghost’ (History of the Church, 5:499). We were baptized by immersion in water for the remission of sins. We must also be baptized by and immersed in the Spirit of the Lord, ‘and then cometh a remission of your sins by fire and by the Holy Ghost.’”

    • Commentary: Commentary on D&C 49:22–23
    • Quote: “Adam held the priesthood. Eve served in matriarchal partnership with the patriarchal priesthood. So today, each wife may join with her husband as a partner unified in purpose. Scriptures state clearly, ‘Neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord.’ ‘They twain shall be one flesh.’ Marvelously, it takes a man and a woman to make a man or a woman. Without union of the sexes, neither can we exist, nor can we become perfect. Ordinary and imperfect people can build each other through their wholeness together. The complete contribution of one partner to the other is essential to exaltation. This is so ‘that the earth might answer the end of its creation.’ So labor and love in partnership. Honor your companion. Any sense of competition for place or position is not appropriate for either partner, especially when enlightened by scriptural understanding.”

Wednesday

  • Scripture: Doctrine and Covenants 49:23-28
  • Commentary: Commentary on D&C 49:24–25
  • Commentary: Commentary on D&C 49:26–28
  • Quote: “Listen to this scripture found in Doctrine and Covenants. It may have been written under different circumstances, but tonight by the Holy Spirit, I hope you will take it as your personal call to this sacred work. ‘Behold, I say unto you, go forth as I have commanded you; repent of all your sins; ask and ye shall receive; knock and it shall be opened unto you. Behold, I will go before you and be your rearward; and I will be in your midst, and you shall not be confounded. Behold, I am Jesus Christ, and I come quickly.’ I appeal to each of you to put yourself in a place where you can feel the generous love God has for you. You cannot put yourself beyond the reach of that love. When you feel His love, when you love Him, you will repent and keep His commandments. When you keep His commandments, He can use you in His work. His work and glory is the exaltation and eternal life of women and men. The prophets are calling on us, my sisters. Will you be righteous? Will you articulate your faith? Can you bear being distinct and different? Will your happiness in spite of your trials draw others who are good and noble and who need your friendship? Will you turn on your light? I testify the Lord Jesus Christ will go before us and be in our midst.”
    - Sharon Eubank, "Turn on Your Light," October 2017 General Conference
  • Quote: “He whose name this church bears has promised that He will be in our midst, lead us along, go before us, and even fight our battles. He has further counseled, ‘Be not afraid of your enemies, for I have decreed in my heart … that I will prove you in all things, whether you will abide in my covenant, even unto death, that you may be found worthy.’ So let us have patience and faith as did Lehi who saw pointing fingers of scorn directed at those who grasped the iron rod, which rod, ironically, some of those same fingers once grasped. But, said Lehi, ‘we heeded them not.’ So it should be with us! Brothers and sisters, being pointed in the right direction, we do not need to worry about being pointed at!”

Thursday

  • Commentary: Section 50: Context
  • Scripture: Doctrine and Covenants 50:1-9
  • Commentary: Commentary on D&C 50:1–5
  • Commentary: Commentary on D&C 50:6–9
  • Quote: “Now we know that there are many spirits abroad in the land and as the Lord says, some of their doctrines are doctrines of devils; some are the commandments of men. Are we prepared by our knowledge and understanding to segregate these doctrines which are of men and which are of devils, from the truth? Are we living near enough unto the Lord to have that spirit of discernment, that we are entitled, as we would be through our humility and faith, to know the truth that would make us free?”

    • Commentary: The Hypocrite
    • Quote: “In the early history of the Church, because the elders did not understand the manifestations of different spirits abroad which were disturbing the members, the Lord, in answer to prayerful inquiry, warned: ‘Behold, verily I say unto you, that there are many spirits which are false spirits, which have gone forth in the earth, deceiving the world.’ What was true then is true now, and ever will be until Satan and his evil hosts are forever bound and shorn of their power to deceive and destroy. The Prophet Joseph Smith taught, ‘Nothing is a greater injury to the children of men than to be under the influence of a false spirit when they think they have the Spirit of God’ (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, page 205). How true this statement is, and how important to know correct Church doctrine and procedures to prevent stumbling along life’s way. It is a great blessing and gift to be able to discern and choose rightly between truth and error.”
      - Delbert L. Stapley, "The Restoration," October 1959 General Conference
    • Quote: “In a revelation given to the Church many years ago, that is, in the days of the Prophet, he warned the members of the Church against false prophets, false spirits, against those who lie in wait to deceive. He gave us a key then by which we may know, but I repeat, this key, given by our Savior in his Sermon on the Mount is just as true today as it was nearly two thousand years ago. It’s his word and can be accepted, can be proved today just as well as it could by his disciples as he spoke to them in this Sermon on the Mount. In interviewing missionaries I frequently ask them, nearly always do, if they have a testimony of the truth. Some of them say, ‘No, I do not. I think it is true, but I do not know, but I have the assurance that if I go on this mission I will learn that it is true.’ Down in their hearts they give an honest answer, but I think they know better than they say. However, it is the right of every baptized member in this Church to know for himself by the revelations of the Spirit of the Lord that all that I have said in regard to the establishment of this work is absolutely true. There is no reason in the world why any soul should not know where to find the truth. If he will only humble himself and seek in the spirit of humility and faith, going to the Lord just as the Prophet Joseph Smith went to the Lord to find the truth, he will find it. There’s no doubt about it. There is no reason in the world, if men would only harken to the whisperings of the Spirit of the Lord and seek as he would have them seek for the knowledge and understanding of the gospel of Jesus Christ, for them not to find it—no reason, except the hardness of their hearts and their love of the world. ‘Knock, and it shall be opened unto you.’ This is my testimony, I know it is true. I know that just as well as I know I stand here. The Lord has revealed it to me as he has to my brethren. The Lord bless you all, I pray in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.”
      - Joseph Fielding Smith, "Knock, and It Shall Be Opened unto You-," April 1951 General Conference

Friday

  • Scripture: Doctrine and Covenants 50:10-20
  • Commentary: D&C 50: Historical Context
  • Commentary: Commentary on D&C 50:10–14
  • Commentary: Commentary on D&C 50:15–22
  • Quote: “Thus we learn to teach, yes, we must teach and preach by the Spirit, and to use those testimonies which God has given us in a sacred and a solemn manner. We must not speak lightheartedly of these sacred things, but when we bear testimony we must bear that testimony from the depths of our heart. I told our missionaries this, that when they teach, they must teach by the spirit of truth out of the fulness of their hearts, for as the Lord said, ‘Verily I say unto you, he that is ordained of me and sent forth to preach the word of truth by the Comforter, in the Spirit of truth, doth he preach it by the Spirit of truth or some other way? And if it be by some other way it is not of God.’ And it is true that he who receives the word must receive it in the same way that it is given. He must open up his heart and must receive the message by the spirit of truth, for the Lord goes on to say: ‘And again, he that receiveth the word of truth, doth he receive it by the Spirit of truth or some other way? If it be some other way it is not of God.’ Thus the spirit of truth is a bridge which reaches between honest people everywhere. It is a bridge of honesty. It is a bridge of sincerity. It is a bridge of brotherly love.”

    • Quote: “A...key to ensuring those we teach and lead are ‘nourished by the good word of God’ is also found in the Savior’s direction ‘to preach my gospel by the Spirit, even the Comforter which was sent forth to teach the truth.’ Not only are the Savior’s words directing us to follow the guidance of the Spirit as we prepare and as we teach; He is also teaching that it is the Spirit that is the most effective teacher in any given situation.President Joseph Fielding Smith taught: ‘The Spirit of God speaking to the spirit of man has power to impart truth with greater effect and understanding than the truth can be imparted by personal contact even with heavenly beings.’”

Saturday

  • Scripture: Doctrine and Covenants 50:21-29
  • Commentary: Commentary on D&C 50:23–25
  • Commentary: Commentary on D&C 50:26–28
  • Quote: “Christ’s light and the gospel message of light and salvation can be darkened in our own lives only by our disobedience and lack of faith. In like manner the Savior’s light increases in our lives as we keep the commandments and strive continually to be like Him. For ‘that which is of God is light; and he that receiveth light, and continueth in God, receiveth more light; and that light groweth brighter and brighter’. As the light of Jesus Christ and His gospel grows brighter within our countenances and our hearts, it becomes easier for us to discern what is truly valuable from the counterfeits the world offers. Knowledge that Christ loved us enough to willingly bear the weight of our sins removes the need for pride and an unwarranted trust in the arm of flesh. Belief that the Atonement restores to us all we lose to sin and missteps along life’s path creates a hope greater than any temporal pleasure or momentary mortal thrill.”
    - Virginia U. Jensen, "Lead, Kindly Light," October 2000 General Conference
  • Quote: “‘That which is of God is light,’ the Lord teaches us, ‘and he that receiveth light, and continueth in God, receiveth more light; and that light groweth brighter and brighter until the perfect day.’ That means, brothers and sisters, that in time and through ‘great diligence,’ we too can have our own pillar of light—one ray at a time. And in the midst of that pillar, we too will find a loving Heavenly Father calling us by name, pointing us to our Savior, Jesus Christ, and inviting us to ‘Hear Him!’”
    - Alexander Dushku, "Pillars and Rays" April 2024 General Conference
  • Quote: “Today is a day of clever deception, a day when the Master declared one of the signs of his coming should be that even the very elect, according to the covenant, would be deceived. One of our boys now studying in a large university on the coast declared that the ‘thing that had kept him from losing faith in the Bible which the higher critics have decimated almost to a point of non-recognition,’ he said, ‘the thing that has kept my faith is that I know the Book of Mormon is true, and because of that testimony I know that what they are saying about the Bible is false and not the truth.’ The Lord has given us a sure guide as to how we might discern truth from error. He said: ‘And that which doth not edify is not of God. . . . That which is of God is light; and he that receiveth light and continueth in God, receiveth more light; and that light groweth brighter and brighter until the perfect day.’”

Sunday

  • Scripture: Doctrine and Covenants 50:30-46
  • Commentary: Commentary on D&C 50:29–36
  • Commentary: Commentary on D&C 50:37–46
  • Quote: “The Lord revealed this additional truth to the Prophet Joseph Smith: ‘He that receiveth of God, let him account it of God; and let him rejoice that he is accounted of God worthy to receive.’ When we feel the Spirit, as this verse explains, we recognize that what we feel comes from our Heavenly Father. We acknowledge Him and praise Him for blessing us. We then rejoice that we are counted worthy to receive. Imagine that you are reading the scriptures one morning and the Spirit softly whispers to you that what you are reading is true. Can you recognize the Spirit and be happy that you felt His love and were worthy to receive? Mothers, you might be kneeling next to your four-year-old as he says his bedtime prayer. A feeling flows over you as you listen. You feel warmth and peace. The feeling is brief, but you recognize that you, at that moment, are counted worthy to receive. We may seldom, if ever, receive huge spiritual manifestations in our lives; but we can frequently savor the sweet whisperings of the Holy Ghost verifying the truth of our spiritual worth.”
    - Joy D. Jones, "Value Beyond Measure," October 2017 General Conference
  • Quote: “The most important thing we can do—young or old—is develop a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. If we do, we will always be comfortable with ourselves. Any questions of self-esteem and self-worth will diminish, and we will have a quiet confidence that will see us through any trial. And the Savior’s promise to us is ‘Fear not, little children, for you are mine, and I have overcome the world’. Whatever the anxiety or fear or frustration, we have only to remember the Lord’s comforting words to the Prophet Joseph Smith in the Liberty Jail: ‘My son, peace be unto thy soul’. To each of us, He will always be there to say, ‘My son, my daughter, my child, peace be unto thy soul.’”
